Weightlifting at last!

Finally managed to finish work early enough to be home for 5pm and I got some weightlifting in, finally!

Was really excited for some reason lol. Felt like it was Christmas.

Until I got under the bar.

I decided to start with some 5 rep sets of squats.

I’ll stick with 2.5kg over bodyweight to start with I thought. So I plonked 72.5kg on the bar and holy moly did it feel heavy.

5th rep I was straining, I could feel the veins in my head bulging lol.

2nd set was strangely easier and 3rd set felt pretty good too.

Guess I just needed to greese the cogs as it were.

I wanted to do more but thought better of it, we’ll see how my body feels over the next few days lol.

Also did some bent over rows, as I don’t feel I can do any deadlifting until I’m properly back into it. And I stuck with 46.5kg on the bar for 3 sets of 8 for those.

Then I did a 10 rep set of chin ups and finished off with some side raises, because I could lol.

I’m going to work on a plan this week for the coming few months. And this time I think I’ll put down 15 exercises that I want to do through the week and then when I get home from delivery driving, I can pick a few exercises from the list, according to how tired I am.

That’s the plan anyway, it working is another thing, we’ll see how my body reacts this week.

Until next time,

New job, new beginnings and all that.

Not posted a diary entry for a whole month. Not felt the desire to write anything down, it’s been a productive month though, I’ve finally got a new job, whoop!

Ironically it’s not a HGV driving job, but it is a local delivery driving job, Well, I say local. The company is local, but the delivering isn’t, but that’s fine. As long as I can get to work within 10 minutes then I’m well happy.

I actually applied for the driving role before I got my HGV license, but then forgot about it as I was informed that they weren’t recruiting any more drivers at the moment.

Then out of the blue in the middle of Feb I received a phone call asking if I wanted to come in for a chat and then within two weeks I was accepted for the role and I’ve just finished two weeks of my five weeks of training.

I won’t name the company I’m working for, but anyone who has been or is a delivery driver in the UK will probably know who it is, or will realise who it is most likely in future posts.

I’m still training. And whilst I’m training it’s difficult to fully evaluate the role as my wage is subsidised by the company. But from what other drivers who get on with the job have told me, it is a very good wage, you just have to be a hard worker and get on with it.

I’ve just completed two weeks of classroom training, learning about the company, it’s procedures and it’s future aims etc. Plus I had a few days out with a driver to watch how it’s all done, then I had 3 days out delivering some parcels myself.

It’s been a steep learning curve, but a good one and now I’m eager to get going on my own route so I can get to know the area’s and then quicken up my delivery times so I can deliver more and hopefully get paid more!

I’ve read some negative comments about the company online and from what I’ve experienced so far, a lot of it is from ex-drivers who don’t want to put the effort into the role.

Sure it’s hard work, but any delivery driving role will normally be a 10-12hr day, five days a week, sometimes a sixth or seventh day too, but the difference with this one is that you get paid very well for it.

They don’t expect the drivers to work seven days, but they do expect you to do some six day weeks, which is fine by me. I want a job that I can earn enough to pay off my debt. Once that’s done I’ll go from there.

Until that time, I want the work and I’m happy to work six 10-12hr days a week for it.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of people who work longer hours and for less pay than I should be getting. I say should, because I don’t know I can definitely earn what I want yet, I might be shit at my job and have to find another one pmsl.

Enough of that, lets see how my first week out on my own route goes next week!

The last month has been great sleep and health wise. It’s amazing how great I feel energy wise and mentally too.

Getting regular 6+ hrs of sleep, during the night, in one stint has enabled me to start feeling healthy again. I’ve been eating proper meals, not snacking on crap and overall I can feel my body and mind thanking me for it every day now.

I’ve not got back into a regular fitness routine yet, but I’ve made sure to keep pretty active and do something bodyweight wise every day.

Yesterday was the first time this year that I’ve touched a weight. And I just did a simple lightweight ten rep set of 50kg squats, along with some chin ups and some push ups and I felt great doing it.

I’m going to gradually increase what I do weight wise whilst I’m learning my new delivery route over the next 3 weeks and by then I should be back to some decent weights and workouts and really start to feel like my old self again.

If only I’d changed jobs sooner!

Until next time…

Wednesday musings

I made the decision to wake up an hour after my partner this morning.

She got up at 6 am to go for a run on the treadmill. And I decided that even though I don’t have a job, I should start waking up at the time I probably will once I do.

Create a routine an all.

So I was awake at 7 am and up and ready for the day by 8 am. Which was the earliest for a few weeks.

I decided to hit some household choirs head on as I’d been putting the off for a week.

The main choir being cleaning the oven.

That took me most of the morning. We use it a lot as we like to cook proper foods and we rarely eat ready meals.

We both need to get into the habit of giving it a more regular wipe down.

Then I did the hoovering and felt some weird sense of accomplishment at the house having a clean floor.

Had some lunch and then arranged another job interview for tomorrow. This time with a local delivery company, so fingers crossed that turns out positive as I’d prefer to work locally.

Now I’m spending a few hours this afternoon reading. One thing I read that stuck out for me was this… 2 Mental Shifts.

I’ve always worked for the business I work at and not just for myself. From memory, I’ve always been one of the first people to take on more work when needed. To stay later/work extra days if needed or even help others with their tasks when not asked if I can see they’re running late or could just do with a hand.

Not because I enjoy being praised, but because I know that everything that everyone does or doesn’t do, effects the company. And ultimately as an employee it’s in my interest that everyone in the company and the actual company it self, does well.

Without a doubt looking at a lot of people that are unhappy in their job, one of the main reasons is that they don’t go that extra mile for the company or their fellow worker. They do it for praise and/or a promotion/raise.

I couldn’t care less about gaining promotions or praise. Sure I like to be told every now and again that I’ve done a good job. But I’m an adult, I know I’ve done a good job when the job has been completed as required and because I’ve done it.

If I’ve been asked to do a job, I’ll do it as best I can, as quick as time allows and I’ll go the extra mile if needed without being asked. Because I like to do a good job. Not because I want to please my bosses, I’ve generally worked in customer facing roles so the only people that need pleasing are customers.

From experience, I know this gives me browny points with bosses or puts me in their good books and sure I’ve used this in the past too and been able to get days off at short notice or more favourable jobs rather than a mundane task.

But that is never the reason I do a good job. I do a good job because I enjoy doing a good job and want a customer to have a good experience of the company they are dealing with. Why bother doing something if you’re not going to do it to the best of your abilities?

Huh. Wednesday musings turned into something else. That’s enough of that.

Time for some more activity me thinks, bodyweight only, 3 rounds of push ups, squats and chin ups is good enough right now.

Until next time…

Widowmaker squats, sausages and chips

I think I’ve done more exercise in the last few weeks than I have for the several months before, and if not then it feels like it, but either way I’m starting to feel the rewards on a daily basis again.

I didn’t set out to do something every day, because I wanted to do a workout every other day. But I forgot how tired I felt the days after a full workout, what with the lack of sleep and getting up early every night during the week.

It seems by splitting up the exercises into 3-5 movements a day and only doing the main lifts as and when I feel fully recovered that I am able to be more consistent.

I think with this weeks plans I should at least have covered all main lifts 1-2 times in the last 2 weeks, plus done each of the accessory exercises 2-3 times.

I could of course simply reduce the weight on the main lifts right down and just stick with them, but I’ve done that in the past and never enjoyed it. I enjoy doing something more regularly and more varied.

Hey ho, this way of working out is working for me right now so I’m going with it whilst it lasts.

This is what I did today:

Barbell Widowmaker Squat: 20 x 75kg – although these were only 1kg over bodyweight, a few weeks ago they really puffed me out, today not so, my legs were burning slightly by the end, but I definitely think my conditioning has come up a level these last few weeks.

Barbell Goodmorning: 10 x 27.5kg, 10 x 32.5kg, 10 x 37.5kg – not done these for months, since my neck injury actually. Was pretty reluctant to do them, but I now how good they are and as long as I don’t get stupid and add silly weights on before my body is ready then I’ll be good.

Dumbbell Shrug: 15 x 20kg, 15 x 22.5kg, 15 x 25kg

Rear Delt Cable Row – Face Pull: 10 x 10kg, 10 x 12.5kg, 10 x 15kg

After that I chucked down some lovely sausages and chips, couldn’t be arsed with anything else, mmmmm I loves sausages so much. Proper one’s though, got to be over 90% pork otherwise they’re not worth bothering with. Jolly Hog are my favourite brand at the moment, proper bangers that don’t shrivel or shed loads of fat when cooking!

Anyhoo, I’m on an early tomorrow, but it’s a not so early as normal, only up at 3:30am instead of 2:30am lol, so I think I’ll try for some overhead pressing as I loves that!

Until next time…

Journal Entry 03.09.16 – Relaxation time and Cinema

Well my writing a journal entry every day didn’t last long. Not that I thought it would, but 3 days I think it was? lol

Anyway, lots of relaxation the last few days. Plenty of WoW playing, watching sport, a little bit of HGV studying and a visit to the cinema today to watch the new Star Trek movie.

Star Trek and Star Wars are probably my two most favourite sci-fi movies/series ever and they can do no wrong in my eyes. And this latest Star Trek was just as good as the previous two in this current run, it’s just so sad that the guy who played Chekov died in real life, he played him so well and I really loved his role in this movie.

It was a nice touch in the movie itself for the original Spock to be remembered and in the credits too. I never really got into sci-fi until my mid twenties I think it was so I didn’t get attached to the old Spock, but from the few movies I did see he was a great actor and I could’ve seen him staring in at least one more of the new Star Trek movies.

I’ve actually really enjoyed not doing much these last couple of days, it makes a difference to my work week when it always seems to be pretty hectic and because I’m generally tired most evenings, I never seem to feel like doing much apart from reading lol.

By the time I’ve just about recovered on my two days off, I’m up early again and then up at stupid o’clock getting all tired again by the end of the work week. It’s been a vicious 12 month circle nearly and one that I’ll be glad to see the end of in a few months time.

I’m still kind of kicking myself for taking so long to decide properly to obtain my HGV license as I could’ve had it and been off within a few weeks from now instead of eight more weeks that I’ve probably got, hey ho, live and learn.

Should’ve done a workout today, but I decided against it and will do it tomorrow instead. I’m looking forward to doing the 65kg widow maker barbell squats when I get back from work tomorrow afternoon, think I’ll add in a few other movements but not too many as I want to make sure I get in three workouts next week.

It’s time to get back on it properly, back to eating enough too, after whats been nearly two months of intermittent working out and eating properly. A difficult period job wise and my health and fitness has suffered, go figure.

It should only take a week of being back on it and I’ll notice the difference energy wise, which in turn should have a knock on effect of feeling like I want to work out properly again more regularly, which I’m looking forward to.

Anyhoo, I’m off to finish a quest on wow.

Until next time…

I might be slightly OCD when lifting weights.

I’ve never been a particularly messy person, nor am I a particularly tidy person. I’m kind of in between the two.

But I do think that I might be slightly OCD, although only when I’m lifting weights!

Messy WeightsTidy Weights

Looking at the pictures above the one on the left is when I’m almost finished my workout and the one on the right is when I have finished and put the weights away.

When I get towards the end of my workouts and the room looks like the one on the left, I start to get a strange urge to put the weights away, which is stupid as I need to use most of them during each exercise.

But the most weirdest thing is during the workout when I’ve finished with a certain weight I put it on the floor and then lay the same paired weight on the opposite side of my weights rack so that it’s almost symmetrical to the other one.

I’ve only just noticed myself doing this. I’ll finish a set of something, take some weights off, put some others on, then whilst waiting for my rest period to be up, I’ll rearrange the weights so that they are symmetrical.

And if I don’t my eye’s just keeping catching the weights in odd places and I get a real urge to move them to a symmetrical place.

Fucking weird.

When I’ve finished my workout and I put all the weights back where they came from, I then have to make sure that they are all symmetrical again.

I tried to just leave them where they were, but I just had to put them away in a symmetrical way!

Hey ho, it looks tidy I guess lol.

Anyway, today was squats and overhead press day, I’ve left the weights the same as the last workout and will do for another few, but I’ll try and get an extra rep here and there.

Exercise Reps Weight in KG’s
Barbell Squat 5,5,5,5 78.5,117.5,107.5,97.5
Barbell Glute Bridge 10,10,10 114.5,104.5,99.5
Overhead Press 6,6,6,6 37.5,55,52.5,50
Barbell Rear Delt Row 8,8,8 46.5,44,41.5
Dumbbell Side Raise 10,10,10 10,9,8

I actually decreased the glute bridge weights just slightly as I felt a little unstable on the first set, and I also took 1kg off of each set of the side raises as my shoulders felt whacked from the other shoulder movements.

After spending a fair few hours reading during the day today on a subject I don’t know a lot about my mind actually feels tired this evening, I think I might be able to get to sleep before 10pm for once.

Until next time…

WeeMike

When in doubt, just fucking squat.

Squat Rack

Well, yesterday didn’t got as planned, I felt too whacked from Saturdays deadlifts and so left the workout until today. The weight’s I’m doing are getting heavy now and my body will take a few weeks to get used to the heavier weights, so I need to make sure I get enough rest between workouts and enough sleep too!

It’s no biggy having an extra days rest, I felt like I needed it as my back muscles were still aching yesterday afternoon and so I thought I’d take an extra days rest rather than do a workout back to back with no rest in between.

It turned out a good decision as I woke up at 4am this morning to go delivery driving still aching, in fact even more so I think lol. I’ve definitely reached a level of heaviness with the weights that they are starting to really do some work on my body.

Anyway, I got home after work this afternoon and really didn’t feel like working out, I felt quite hungry and tired for some reason. I think the inconsistent early starts aren’t as easy to get used to as getting up early every day, well that’s what I’m telling myself.

I probably also felt this way as my body is using all available food for recovery and growth and it’s just going to take a few weeks to get used to.

I drank a load of sugar via my blackcurrant squash and within 30 minutes I felt a little better and just thought I’d go for it.

Here’s what I did today:

Exercise Reps Weight in KG’s
Barbell Squat 5,5,5,5 78.5,117.5,107.5,97.5
Barbell Glute Bridge 10,10,10 104,109,114
Overhead Press 6,6,6,8 37.5,55,52.5,50
Barbell Rear Delt Row 8,8,8 46.5,44,41.5
Dumbbell Side Raise 10,10,10 11,10,9

Holy shit the squats were tough. I decided to do the heaviest set straight after the warm up set and loaded i[ 2.5kg too much without realising it.

I really had to push hard for the final rep and once I’d re-racked the weight I was so fucked that I looked at the weight and then realised I’d put the wrong weight on.

It’s not a weight I haven’t squatted before, but I have a level that I’m working towards after so much time off, and I think that technically skipping a workout and lifting a weight before my body was ready is the reason I’m so whacked.

Anyway, to top it off I then did the same thing on the overhead presses, although this time I didn’t get the heaviest set wrong lol.

Hey ho, the workouts done and I’m seriously whacked now. I think an early night is in order, especially seeing as though I’ve got a normal start tomorrow, more sleep is the answer!

My eating this last week has been below where it needs to be, but better than the week before, so I’m getting there slowly, yet again though I went a bit too low on the day after what I call my refeed day, or junk day normally.

Calories 2

I like to over indulge once a week on some sweets an stuff, but it seems the next day I’m not so hungry. So I need to find some easy to eat foods to make sure I’m not too low on calories again this week. Although it should be a little easier this week as I have a workout the day after junk day and I’m usually hungrier on workout days, so we’ll see.

I didn’t take any stats yesterday as I realised it was only a week since I last did. I normally take stats every few weeks when on a routine like this as week to week changes can be too variable.

I definitely feel this last week has seen me get closer still to my fitness and strength levels of last year, I’m feeling stronger and firmer in the muscles than even just a few weeks ago, so the hard work is starting to pay off, just another 36 workouts to go!

Until next time…
